Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism 101 (Up to 6 hours)

An in-depth hybrid session exploring the fundamental concepts which strengthen anti-oppressive and anti-racist frameworks interpersonally and institutionally.

Practical activities are used to illustrate how oppression and racism operate within Canadian institutions, including how racism gets reinforced through professional positions, organizations and industries and how it differs from alternative forms of oppression.

Tangible action planning will encourage opportunities for critical reflection, accountability and growth to build competency around diverse, equitable and inclusive ways of improving policies, practices, procedures and interactions.

Topics Covered:

  • Exploring ways racism and oppression operate on multiple levels – including internalized, interpersonal and institutional

  • Impacts of colonialism and systems of oppression – with a focus on racism – including sexism, ableism, heterosexism, cissexism, classism and more

  • Improving workplace trust through accountability and transformative justice – for ourselves, towards colleagues and from leadership

  • Embedding anti-oppressive and anti-racist perspectives into professional practice
